Dual Mode dropout |

Short Description Of Idea: Convertible horizontal/vertical dropout A removable derailleur mount is designed so that it fills in most of the length of a horizontal dropout, leaving only a slot for a vertical dropout. A complementary attachment would go on the left dropout, but would not have a derailleur mount, simply a device that fills in most of the horizontal slot. Description from James Black: The drawing shows a removeable derailleur mount attached to the infill piece - one could accomplish the same thing, of course, with the derailleur eye permanently attached to the dropout, although this approach, per Steve's suggestion, seems like a more elegant solution. As I ponder what's in this sketch, it seems like it could be a quite effective solution, and fairly easy to accomplish on the fabrication side, certainly simpler and lighter than sliding dropouts or eccentric bottom brackets. I haven't thought much about how the removeable bit is fastened in place, but that would not be rocket science.
